What if we fail to maintain environmental sustainability? Students from 3 rd grade, Liceul Teoretic Mircea Eliade, Galati, Romania If we fail to maintain environmental sustainability, the consequences could be severe. The Earth's natural systems and resources, upon which all life depends, would be threatened. Climate change, pollution, loss of biodiversity, and depletion of naturalresources would all likely accelerate. Pollution, caused by human activity such as industrialization and urbanization, would continue to damage the environment and human health. Air and water pollution would lead to respiratory and heart disease, and toxic chemicals would contaminate soil and water, making them unfit for human consumption. Climate change, caused by the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation , would lead to rising temperatures, more extreme weather events, and sea level rise.
